Hey, I’m Will.

I’m a tech lead and software engineer in Canada working across product and platform. I build features, internal tools, release systems, and the tracing and metrics that help teams understand what their software is doing. Most days involve turning a fuzzy problem into something manageable, working through it with designers and engineers, and making the next release a little easier. Away from the keyboard, I’m usually spending time with my two kids.

Tinkerings

I’m curious by nature and learn best by doing. This is where I try new ideas and technologies, build something small, and see where it leads.

Scribbles

Short notes on ideas I’m working through in tech — the things I learn while building, shipping, and figuring out what happened.

Feature flags can target infrastructure, too

I had an optimization to release where a failure would affect an entire pod. Targeting a few users or tenants wouldn’t contain it, and rolling out to a whole region would put too much at risk. The change had to happen at the pod level.

I added a pod context in LaunchDarkly and enabled the change for a percentage of pods. When the flagged pods started failing, traffic moved to healthy ones. I turned the flag off in seconds, before it became an incident.

Flags don’t have to be for users. They can control infrastructure as well. Pick the rollout unit that matches the thing that can fail.
